Study on learned helplessness and learned optimism Martin Seligman, a pioneer of positive psychology, conducted studies on learned helplessness and learned optimism. In his studies, Seligman showed that people who learn to think more optimistically are more resilient to stress and challenges. __________________________________________________________________________ Seligman, M. A long-term study by Becca Levy and colleagues examined the relationship between positive affectivity (feelings of happiness, satisfaction and well-being) and longevity. The researchers analyzed the emotional expressions in the autobiographies of 180 nuns and found that those who expressed more positive emotions in their writings lived longer on average. __________________________________________________________________________ Source: Levy, B. Positive thinking and immune system study A study by Suzanne Segerstrom and Gregory Miller analyzed 300 scientific articles on the relationship between positive thinking and immune system function. The meta analysis found that people with a positive attitude generally have better immune function and are better able to fight off infections.
