Visualization and pain reduction study. In 2011, Jensen et al. studied the effects of visualization on pain in individuals with chronic pain.

In this study, 33 participants with multiple sclerosis and chronic pain were divided into two groups.

The intervention group received self-hypnosis and visualization training. This training involved learning self-hypnosis techniques and using these techniques to imagine pain being reduced or controlled. Participants were instructed to focus on their breathing and imagine pleasant scenes or sensations to influence their perception of pain.

The control group received a relaxation-based intervention that did not include a specific visualization technique for pain reduction.

Participants in both groups attended 5 weekly sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, and they were asked to practice what they learned daily at home. Pain intensity and the extent of catastrophizing were assessed before and after the intervention and at a 3 month follow-up. The results of the study showed that the intervention group that received the self hypnosis and visualization training had a significant reduction in daily pain intensity and level of catastrophizing compared to the control group. These improvements were still visible at the 3-month follow-up. It is important to note that although this study used visualization techniques in the context of self-hypnosis, the results support the potential efficacy of visualization for pain reduction in people with multiple sclerosis and chronic pain. __________________________________________________________________________ Jensen, M.
