Study of visualization and motor rehabilitation. In the 2005 study by Page, Levine and Leonard, researchers examined the effectiveness and feasibility of mental exercise (visualization) in stroke patients in the acute phase of their illness.

In this study, 16 stroke patients hospitalized within 24 hours of their stroke were randomly assigned to one of two groups.

Mental Exercise Group. Participants in this group were given mental exercises in which they imagined performing certain motor tasks with the affected limb (for example, grasping or lifting an object). The mental exercise was in addition to standard rehabilitation therapy provided by therapists at the hospital. Control group. Participants in this group received standard rehabilitation therapy without mental exercise. Participants' motor function was assessed at baseline and 2 weeks after stroke. Assessments included measures of motor function such as the Fugl-Meyer assessment and the Modified Ashworth Scale. The results of the study showed that the mental exercise group had significant improvements in motor function compared to the control group. The researchers noted that mental exercise could be a promising adjunct to standard rehabilitation therapy for stroke patients in the acute phase. However, they emphasized that further research with larger samples and longer follow-up periods is needed to better understand the long-term effects of mental exercise on motor rehabilitation in stroke patients. __________________________________________________________________________ Page, S.
