04-001-US The Future of Learning (Part 1)
These brain areas are interconnected and interact in complex ways to enable learning and motivation in the context of gamification. Activating these different areas can help increase learner engagement and readiness to learn, and ultimately improve learning outcomes.
Scientific studies There are a number of scientific studies on gamification in the context of the future of learning. One such study is the following: The effects of gamification on learning and instruction The study examined a total of 262 participants who were divided into two groups: a control group that received the traditional, text-based learning approach and an experimental group that received the gamified version of the learning content. Both groups received the same information and learning materials, but gamification elements were added to the presentation and structure of the content in the gamified group. Some of the gamification elements used in the study are: Points: Learners received points for completing learning units and answering questions. The points served as rewards and feedback to encourage learner engagement. Leaderboards: Participants could track their progress against other participants on a leaderboard. This promoted healthy competition and motivated learners to keep trying. Badges: Learners received badges for reaching certain milestones or completing particular challenges. These served as recognition of the learners' achievements and motivated them to continue.
Progress Indicators: Participants could track their progress within the learning application to get a better sense of how close they were to completing the course.
